I recently returned from nearly a week out at SIGGRAPH and thought I’d put together a few highlights to share with you.
New mentored courses for long distance learners
Today we’ve launched a brand new set of online mentored learning courses to offer a helping hand to international grads and drive the next wave of computer graphics talent. The twelve-month course offers the same high quality, interactive training experience as our flagship Visual Effects classroom course.
TWO Free Polygonal Modelling Tutorials
If you were looking to improve your modelling skills you couldn't have picked a better time, because this month we're giving away TWO free tutorials instead of one!
Calling all Uni Grads
We are launching our new online competition to uncover the crème of the CG class of 2010 on both sides of the Atlantic. The CG Graduate Design Awards is the first international competition of its kind, where we’ll be giving the most talented graduates out there a helping hand into the competitive computer graphics world.
Feedback competition winners
We’re pleased to announce the winners of our latest Facebook competition. Having submitted their showreels to the Escape Studios Facebook fan page, five people were selected at random.
Chance to win online course access and feedback
Following the success of our 500 competition, we’re launching another one exclusively on Facebook. We’ve improved the prize as well – not only will the winner get three months access to an online course of their choice, they’ll also receive a free critique of their work by one of Escape’s tutors, all experts in their fields. Four runners up will also receive critiques of a piece of their work.
Register for your Free Tutorials
Make sure that you're registered to receive our free monthly tutorials because we have some amazing ones scheduled over the coming months. The tutorials are different every month and cater for all levels of ability; some will be for those just starting out in the industry and others will be professional level, designed to help fine tune skills.
Free Advanced Level Tutorial - Perfect Your Shading Skills
This month's Free Tutorial is taken from our Advanced Shading with Maya & Mental Ray online course and is one of many videos which explains how to harness the power of Maya's utility nodes to simplify, speed up & add realism to your work. This tutorial is great because you'll use a practical example.
Facebook fan page competition winner
We're delighted to announce that Alida Serrano has won our competition for three months' free access to one of our online courses. Alida, from New Jersey, US, was one of our fans on Facebook, and was selected at random from our followers on Thursday 1st April.
New online courses for next generation of bedroom CG enthusiasts
We’re launching a brand new set of online courses – Self Directed Learning. These low-cost distance learning courses are aimed at students, aspiring 3D artists and computer graphics (CG) hobbyists across the world, and cover CG industry staples Maya, ZBrush and Nuke in detail.
Announcing The Winners of the CG Whiz Competition...
Congratulations to all the finalists of our CG Whiz competition. We had a great time at the Reveal Event last night, meeting the future stars of the CG industry. As we’ve said before, we were overwhelmed by the sheer number and quality of the entries we’ve received.
20 animated submissions for upcoming Oscars
Not sure how many of you have been following this story, but a whopping 20 feature films have been submitted for the Animated Feature film category for the upcoming Oscars. This is great news for the industry as it means we’re well on track to getting five nominees qualifying for the category at the awards next February (we normally only have 3!).
Free Advanced Lighting Tutorial
We have just made a great new free tutorial available to you all: Advanced Lighting for VFX Artists. This is ideal material for VFX artists who wants to improve your lighting skills.

Hi all,
I recently caught up with Paul Hilton, Senior Lecturer BA (Hons) Animation at The Arts University College at Bournemouth. AUCB recently purchased our online Maya coursware for themselves and their students, so I asked Paul how they were finding the experience:
New online courses: VFX Advanced Shading and Lighting
We’ve got a couple of exciting new online courses coming up for slightly more experienced CGers. The Advanced Lighting and Advanced Shading modules are aimed at people with a bit of Maya knowledge, having completed the Maya Core program.
We’ve reached the halfway point
We’re halfway through the competition and we’ve already had 49 entries – a great response, but we’re still keen to see what everyone else is working on.
